OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP

Replace 3 regular light bulbs with 3 energy saving ones.  If every household did this, the energy saved could power all the our state's street lights for a year.

Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.

•  Defrost your freezer regularly to keep it running efficiently and cheaply.

Try to only use your dishwasher and washing machine when it has a full load. Hand or drip dry dishes whenever possible.

Only heat areas of the home that you use - turn off the vents in the spare bedroom if you can.

•  Don't overheat or over-cool your home. Turn your heat  thermostat down by one degree to cut your fuel consumption by around 10% and save the same amount by using your air conditioning only as necessary.

Fill the water kettle with only enough water for what you need. You'll get your drink quicker and save energy too!

Drive Smart!  A well-tuned car with properly inflated tires burns less gasoline—cutting pollution and saving you money at the pump. If you have two cars, drive the one with better gas mileage whenever possible. Better yet, skip the drive and take public transit, walk, or bicycle when you can.

Write your leaders now.  Urge them to raise fuel economy standards to exceed 40 miles per gallon.  Modern technology can make our cars and trucks go farther on a gallon of gas. It's the biggest single step we can take to curb global warming. The less gasoline we burn, the less CO2 we put into the air. Taking this step could save millions of barrels of oil a day.  And by saving gas, you save nearly $2,000 at the pump over the life of your car.

Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
Especially those that burn the longest each day. Compact fluorescents produce the same amount of light as normal bulbs, but use about a quarter of the electricity and last ten times as long. Each switch you make helps clean the air today, curb global warming, and save you money on your electricity bill.

Become a smart water consumer.  Install low-flow showerheads and faucets and you'll use half the water without decreasing performance. Then turn your hot water heater down to 120°F and see hot-water costs go down by as much as 50 percent.

Next time you replace your most frequently used automobile, purchase a fuel-efficient car, rated up to 32 mpg or more preferably a hybrid.  Pollution reduction = 5,600 lbs/year

•  Buy food and other products with reusable or recyclable packaging.
